Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer’s performance analysis – NFL Special
Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer has been getting a great deal of criticism of late for failing to take the team to the next level.
Ever since been signed by Raiders in the 2011 season, Palmer has been expected to come up with extraordinary performances, a feat not easy to achieve for Palmer and company.
In other words, Palmer has been consistent in his time with Raiders, but not dominant enough to push the team to glory.
With the 2012 season nearing its end, it is almost certain that Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie will do some restructuring of the roster in the coming offseason.
Raiders head coach Dennis Allen has already indicated that Terrelle Pryor will be tried and given playing time during the final games of the season to decide his prospects with the team.
Palmer currently has one year left in his three-year contract. The player is due to get a base salary of $13 million for the 2013 season.
So what exactly are the chances of Palmer keeping his starting place next season and what exactly has gone wrong with the veteran in his failure to fulfil the expectations?
First of all, looking at the team’s performance in the 2012 season one can clearly see that even though Palmer has not been among the top quarterbacks this season, the player has been consistent in putting up big numbers on the field.
Palmer has been able to cover good amount of passing yards. However, it takes quite a lot of snaps for him to do so. The quarterback lacks the efficiency to extract maximum gains out of every snap.
Palmer always had the tendency to throw interceptions and the quarterback has been no different at Raiders. The player has averaged 14 interceptions per season throughout his career.
There is also a hint that Palmer has not been able to adjust to the Raiders offensive scheme. Even his former boss and Browns head coach Pat Shurmur believes this is the case. Shurmur once said:
“He's developing a relationship with his receivers, and it's obviously taking time. Even though he was there at the end of last year, it's a new system for him, and there is a lot of new this year for him that I'm sure he's got to work through.”
The good thing about Palmer is that he is always ready to take the criticism about his performance.
However, one should not blame Palmer for all the problems Raiders are having at the moment. Even Palmer admits that he is doing his best to give better output. Palmer recently said:
“The focus is everybody’s job. The focus is on your individual job and finding a way to win. Win your individual battles up front, and win your battles on the outside, and don’t think about past games, don’t think about records, just think about what your
job is on each play and executing your job.”
The lack of progress in the Raiders running game has affected the performance of Palmer. The defence has also been unable to pull the strings in order to support the offence. Lately, Raiders have also been unable to protect their quarterback from getting
hits from the opposing defences.
There is a good chance that Palmer would lose his starting position. However, Raiders should make this decision only if they are able to get a better player than the nine-season veteran.
