Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey returns to practice after missing Week 4 – NFL News
Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey rejoined Oakland Raiders’ practice session for the first time since getting a neck-strain on Tuesday, October 02, 2012.
Heyward-Bey participated in the individual drills alongside the first offensive team. He practised throughout the media window session of practice. He then talked with the reporters after the morning session and said:
"We're kind of at that stage, just trying to take the necessary steps. We've got a plan for me, and today was step No. 1 and I feel pretty good."
Heyward-Bey got a concussion and strained his neck during Raiders’ Week 3 game against Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, September 23. He was unable to play Week 4 game against Denver Broncos on September 30.
The wide receiver got a strong hit on his chin from Steelers safety Ryan Mundy. He was knocked out and landed on the ground in an awkward manner, twisting his neck during that period. He was carted off the field later.
He was then taken to the hospital and remained there for the whole night before being released on Monday, September 24. Mundy got a $21,000 fine for his rough play.
Heyward-Bey failed to participate in any of the practice sessions during last week. He will likely take part in the Raiders’ final practice of this week on Wednesday, October 03.
Raiders will then return to practice field on Monday, October 08, as they take four days off due to Bye-Week.
This will give appropriate time for Heyward-Bey to fully recover and play in the Raiders’ Week 6 game against Atlanta Falcons on October 14.
It was the second time in the last two seasons that Heyward-Bey was carried off the field. The last time it happened was in the 2011 season when he got his neck injured. Talking about his injury, Heyward-Bey said:
"I took a hard hit last year but that was a lot more of a neck injury than a head injury when it came to that one and I came back the next week. For each person individually it's different. Everybody works differently, everybody is a different personality,
so got to look at it that way."
