  1. It isn't a big deal, the media is just making it such.  It's hilarious, frankly, how the 17 year old daughter of the VP candidate is getting more scrutiny than the Democrat's presidential candidate.  What IS amazing is how Democrats and the media seem to know whether or not Palin's daughter was practicing "safe s*x" when the child was conceived.

The most ridiculous scrutiny is "how dare she force her child into the limelight".  After all, her daughter would have lived in relative obscurity with just her entire state and everyone she knows knowing about it already.  I'm sure she could "easily" have explained away the wedding ring and the baby if the national media hadn't exposed that she was at one time pregnant.

I'm sure it was discussed and the daughter said she would rather be the young married daughter of the vice-president rather than the young married daughter of the governor.

  2. I don't think it is a big deal.  Obama has said that Palin's family is "off limits".  The big deal though is that Palin is running for VP when it is obvious her family needs a mother at home with them.  Now her poor daughter is going to be under the scrutiny of the media and this is an extremely hard time for her.

  3. Because Palin is a proponent of abstinence only education, against s*x-ed and birth control.

It is a big part of what she is about... and it clearly didn't work.

  4. OK move on then don't ask these questions

  5. Double standards of the Republicans.

  6. It is the one thing they have. Pretty sad when you think about it. Attack a teenage mother.

  7. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080902/ap_o...

"Palin herself said she opposes funding sexual-education programs in Alaska.

"The explicit s*x-ed programs will not find my support," she wrote in a 2006 questionnaire distributed among gubernatorial candidates."

  8. It isn't a big deal.

However the scrutiny lies in the fact that the GOP preaches abstinence and family values. So, this situation makes them look a bit hypocritical.

  9. No big deal! In fact the fact that the GOP cant try to hijack the moral high horse in this round of elections is pretty satisfying to me!

  10. Hypocrisy.

They're grasping at straws to try to make a distinction between the two, but the basic situations are very similar.

  11. Honestly, for most of us it isn't a big deal at all! There are those few who are overly critical of this whole thing. Both sides need to calm down and get back to what is really important... you know THIS COUNTRY!

  12. Using her daughter to win sympathetic votes from other young mothers.

Why would you subject your kid to the publicity!

  13. It is hypocritical because Palin is the VP nominee of a party which has come out against providing comprehensive s*x education to teens.

We expect that Presidents and VP kids of any party will not get in trouble, these families are the closest which America has to royalty.

And she had herself had previously answered interest group surveys (used to rank candidates) explaining that she believed in teaching abstience only education in public schools.

So, she should have ensured that her own family was following abstinence until marriage. If family values really are going to be an election issue, be sure to follow them yourself!

This news, irrespective of whatever is publically being said, will compromise the ticket's ability to authoritatively comment on the state of morality in America as an election tool: Their own family is not perfect either.

  14. Well, Obama's mother wasn't a politician, Obama's mother wasn't on the national  stage and Obama's mother was certainly more liberal minded than Palin is.

I mean sheesh whow are we kidding here, politicians are celebrities and EVERYTHING they do is up to media scrutiny. So stop playing dumb and saying why is this a big deal.

If one of Obama's daughters was caught making a racist statement to a white kid, don't you think that would make news ? Of course it would, even more so because of how race-neutral Obama talks.

    > AS A POLITICIAN YOU JUST CAN'T HAVE YOUR KIDS GOING AND DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU PREACH, it reflects badly on you.

  15. Baracks mother will not be walking in and out of the White House.

  16. Because when you stand for Strong Family Values, Abstinence, and No s*x Ed in Classrooms, it kind of makes you look hypocritical and kind of stupid.  Alaska has one of the highest STD rates in the nation..

  17. obama's mother never tried to get elected v.p. on a "family values"/ no abortion/ no contraception/ abstinence only platform

maybe the repubs should take out the trash in their own backyards before preaching their alleged morality to the country

  18. Actually, Democrats are the biggest supporters of welfare for unwed mothers as long as you are not white.

They just saw an opportunity to trash McCain and showed the world they would sink low enough to involve a teen girl in political debate.

  19. I haven't made a big deal about Palin's pregnant daughter.

Obama also said that families should be off limits during the election.

Don't get news coverage mixed up with attacks, though.  The press has been covering this a lot, and that's perfectly okay and acceptable.  Just as long as her daughter is not dragged into this election, by either side.

  20. As an Obama supporter I have to say it has nothing to do with the election or the Governor's qualification.  Your question should be directed to the media, especially CNN who ran the story as 'BREAKING NEWS' all day yesterday.  I have plenty to say about Palin's lack of qualifications and questions about her abuse of power charges that are pending than to pry into her daughters private life.  Shame on those who do.

  21. Obama's mother didn't subject her teenage daughter to media scrutiny during a Presidential debate.

  22. If you want a pregnant teen to be ridiculed, step into the national spotlight with an anti-abortion, anti-birth control, pro-abstinence only education stance. What's laughable is it didn't work for her but she's trying to push it on others.

  23. Double standard.

  24. Supposedly since Palin "preaches" pro-abstinence s*x education.  I'm not sure how since last week they'd never even heard of her.

  25. It's not that she has a pregnant teen daughter (I was a teen mom). It's the fact that she whole heartedly is against teen pregnancy prevention and is for abstinence only. It's ironic, really. And apparently it still hasn't clicked with her that there is a need for such education. THAT is the issue I have with it.

  26. Judging by some of the posts shouting about hypocrisy you would think Bristol Palin is the spokesperson for the entire Republican Party.  I'm sure not every Democrat or Republican always did exactly what their parents advised them to.

  27. It is the hypocrisy.  Thats the difference.  Republiocan conservatives talk down to unwed teenage mothers of non-white derivation and hold up marriage and family values as major pillar of their platform. Then they choose a woman who daughter is a prime example of the poor choices that black and brown girls are condemned for everyday.

There is also the reaction that would have come if one of Obama's daughter got knocked up (ifthey were of age).  It would be far more vicious several times over and everyone knows it.
