Obodai Sai outwits experienced Ishmael Tetteh in a non-title 10-round bout – Boxing News
Obodai Sai, the former Commonwealth (British Empire) light middleweight champion, grabbed a stunning and upset unanimous decision win over more experienced fellow countryman Ishmael Tetteh, the former West African Boxing Union light middleweight champion,
in a 10-round bout held on May 26, 2012.
The duo co-headlined the pay-per-view promoted by Mike Tetteh of Goldenmike Boxing Promotions and the ring for the showdown was set up at El-Wak Stadium situated in Accra, Ghana. The night was headlined by the non-title 10-round light middleweight clash
between Joshua Okine and Rafael Sosa Pintos.
Sai, 28, might not have fulfilled the words of knocking Tetteh out but he still did collect a win over former Ghanaian light middleweight champion which is a big deal and has brought him to the forefront in media.
The young lad was entering in his 20th career bout and boasted 18 wins. The Ghanaian proud has nailed 13 of his total opponents and is considered a powerful jab thrower, the reason why he predicted to knock Ishmael out in the fourth round.
Since his last loss to Jamie Cox, a bout in which he lost his newly acquired Commonwealth (British Empire) light middleweight title, Sai was on a three-bout win streak. Also known as ‘The Miracle’, Obodai was seriously outclassed by his Saturday night opponent’s
experience.
Tetteh, also known as ‘Black Roy Jones Junior’, was entering in his career’s 34th bout and boasted 25 wins. Ishmael has also nailed 13 men by knockout and was coming from a four-bout win streak.
Ishmael collected his last loss from Anton Novikov and lost the chance to become the WBC Youth Intercontinental light middleweight champion. During the whole bout, it was Sai who moved here and there in the ring while connecting well-targeted powerful jabs
every now and then.
Tetteh strived extremely hard to cope with Sai’s pace but was unable to do so. In addition, Ishmael did not even capitalise the height and therefore the reach advantage optimally as a result at the end of the day it was Sai who emerged victorious by collecting
98-93, 98-93, and 98- 92 scores.
After the bout, Obodai stated, “The fight didn’t go the way I expected, I predicted to stop him in round four but things did not work right. This is not what I wanted, I’m aiming at reclaiming the Commonwealth title, but I take consolation from the fact
that it has served as a warm up fight for the Commonwealth title.”
With this win Sai has improved his resume to 19 wins and Ishmael, on the other hand, has collected his seventh career loss.
