I'm in the sixth grade now and I'm joining the beginners band, I'm going to be in the bagpipe band as well. Although 6th graders have to work their way up to being able to play with the other bagpipers. Anyways if your in the pipe band you still have to play an instrument for the regular band. In band class our teacher has been introducing the instruments that we can play. And ive narrowed it down to 3... the Oboe, the Clarinet and the Flute. Any help?

  1. I'm going to be playing clarinet.

  2. well oboe is the obvious choice if you are male.

    no offence.

but oboes sound quite 'duckish' (like a duck) for the first 6 mths or so.

but if you are female, ask your teacher about your mouth. if you have braces, try clarinet.

  3. Any of the three would be a good choice. The most difficult of the three is the Oboe. However, there are not a lot of great oboe players. for those who can master it, the oboe makes a beautiful sound.

  4. Well, the clarinet is a common choice, and it's easy to make a bad sound on it. I often find that many people get easily bored with this instrument and end up leaving it, which would be a waste of time and money. You ned to have experience and the right teacher to make a nice sound on it. It can easily be misplayed. However the clarinet is a beautiful instrument with a lovely, warm sound, and is a delight to play.

The oboe is a hard instrument to play, and I find it makes the worst sound of the three. I personally am not a fan of oboes. It can often sound like a duck, and I'm being serious. But played correctly, the oboe can be beautiful to play, and would make a fine option for you.

The flute can be hard to blow I find almost always makes a nice crisp clear sound when played. It is a beautiful instrument, that I find gets equal parts melody and harmony. I also find there are some beautiful solos that the flutes play. I suggest this one more than the other two. I am a flute player and I very much enjoy it.

If you do choose any of these instruments, you need to know that you will need to take the time to practise. If you don't, you won't be any good at them. They need the effort.

You have made a good choice to choose a woodwind instrument. All of them make beautiful music, and are great instruments to play.

Good luck with your future as a musician,

    Maestro.

  5. Before you make your choice, you should first sit down with your band teacher and try each instrument out.  Some people are naturally going to get a better sound on certain instruments.

Flutes tend to be a dime a dozen at this age, though there are always opportunities if you're good.

I would only suggest playing the oboe if you and your parents are willing to commit to private lessons.  This requires effort on your part and time and money on your parents part.  Without lessons, this is a difficult instrument.

The clarinet is an all-around good choice for many people.  I do agree with another poster here that you shouldn't close off the brass options without first trying them with you band director.  Who knows, you may be an awesome trumpet or trombone player and just didn't know it yet!

  6. Well, i would play the one that gives you more of the feel of the Bagpipe. So, with the Bagpipe, does it use reeds? Single or Double. If single or no reed, I would go with Clarinet. If double reed I would go with Oboe as oboe is double reed. I would only go with Flute if you really want to play the flute as I would think it would the the most different than the Bagpipe.

  7. i would recommend the clarinet for you. you get equal parts of the harmony and the melody. you wont get bored. however, if i could talk you into playing a brass instrument now i would, but since you have it narrowed down to those three, so be it. i've been playing clarinet for five years but i play tuba in marching band. brass, by far is the best. but...whatever floats your boat
