The 5 yr old should be engaging in appropriate conversations, taking conversational turns and should be able to ask/answer questions. He should also be at least 80% intelligible. He should be able to play with peers by taking turns and sharing toys. He should be able to sit through a short story, make predictions and answer questions about the story.
