Question:

Obsessive compulsive disorder?

I know very little about OCD. I know that my father had extreme OCD but I don't know very much. I have certain tendencies that friends have pointed out to me and suggested as OCD. One habit caused problems for me in high school during tests like the SATs and finals. Whenever I write, each individual letter must be connected. For example, when some people write the letter "a" quickly, sometimes it isn't closed. Or when I write on lined paper, letters like "h" or "l" must touch from top to bottom line. This is strange, I know, but in high school I used to take so much time during tests correcting those sorts of things that I wouldn't finish tests in time and received poor grades as a result. Is this OCD? Is there anything that can help me with this? Also, is OCD genetic?

  1. yes, definitively, obsessive compulsive disorder is a psychiatric condition in which a person tries hard to "perfect" every little deed to the point that he/she is already depriving his/her, and other people's basic needs, or if it already causes harm to the person or other people around her.

this is in contrast to obsessive compulsive personality which is just being plain "perfectionist", trying to put things in order, for the sake of functionality and smooth work.

in your case, you're already depriving yourself because of your poor test performance, so that's a disorder already.

actually there's no direct link between heredity and OCD... it's only supported by statistics, that most of the people who has OCD has their family members with it as well, but no pathologic factor has been presented yet. the primary factor for OCD and any other psych disorders is the socio-economic status, which involves the environment, emotional trauma which leads to subconscious tendencies, and the personal drives/desires of persons (id, ego, and superego, according to Freud).

trying to stay focused on practical point of view can help you. whenever you have "urges" for perfecting things, always think of the time, the practicality, and functionality of everything you do. it's really good that you are aware of that, at least you can gradually control yourself. don't be pressured, think about it most of the time: PRACTICALITY...
