  1. pros and cons have to be a list you provide since we all think different things are pros and cons. Like I might say a pro is the money and a con is the hours/ on-call/ marriage problem most likely/ long schooling/ long schooling. You might think completely differently. The longer I work in the medical Field the longer I realize its not really that ideal. unless your truly in it to help discover and research new technologies, I seek other positions, like PA you make great money can run your own practice, write and diagnose illnesses, preform paps, work in women's clinic. Not have to maintain the malpractice insurance that is mandatory by Physicians, cause your working under a Md's license. Also NP is something to look into. salaries can reach 175k a year more with overtime and its an 1/10 of the time and money in schooling, with just as much respect.

  2. Having done OB/GYN for twenty some-odd years, I can say that it can be what you want it to be. There are some of us who work furiously Monday through Thursday 9 to 5 and take all the rest of the time off. And others, work at a MORE vigorous pace delivering babies at night and seeing patients in the office all day. That has become tiring for me lately. (I am sitting in the ER now while writing this @ 2:30 AM).

The pros mainly focus on the income for most people but for me, OB/GYN has the highest of the highs (what can be happier than delivering a newborn baby?) and  the lowest of the lows (not all babies survive). It is this roller-coaster that has kept me doing it for this long.

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A REAL DOCTOR WHEN YOU NEED ONE.

  3. An Obstetrician and Gynecologist is pivotal in a mother's smile.

Happiness of a new arrival is unparalleled in any profession.

It gives job satisfaction, adrenaline rush and ob & gyn are financially successful, one of the good paying branch.

But every profession has shortcomings and time needed for patient care, research, teaching usually compete with time used for family and life-style.

You have to work for extended hours being on call. It's " round the clock".

Every patient is an emergency. As an obstetrician you can't choose your working hours, patient will choose that.

You have to face certain bad things also like death of mother/child, abortions or in gyne, painful cancers.

You can choose to work as gynecologist if you don't like emergencies, and can choose to do laparoscopic surgeries if you like to do specialized work only.

Career decision should be based on balancing work, family and other aspect of life style.Again opinion & ideas of work-life balance vary from person to person.

Main thing is you have to be perfectly organized ,usually if you love  your work and family, you will find a way to live up to  your expectations & beliefs.
