Question:

Obtaining a Category D Gun Licence In Queensland?

I am in the middle of starting my own business that culls large animals. In AUSTRALIA!!(Camels-Bores-Roos) I wanted to know if I will be eligible for a category D gun licence so I can use Semi-Auto’s. The business has nothing to do with the government, myself and a mate go to people properties and cull large numbers of Kangaroo's (I have a licence) Bores and Camels because of overpopulation or destroying their livelihood. I have been working for someone else and have been using Bolt actions which are really annoying because by the time you reload, the rest of the camel’s or bore’s have run into the timber or are out of reach. A semi-auto would make my life much, much easier.

  1. i just found out some info today actually, cat d is very restricted for obtaining licence for, for semi automatic you need a d**n good reason as they are illegal here except for military or farmers, for the reason that you have stated about the animals, if you are starting a business it may be possible, firstly I think you would need to get permission/evidence of need (if you have been to any farms and been asked to cull animals, or I think you need to get written evidence from farmers/property owners that you have a reason to have semi automatic weapon). then, you need to apply for the licence, I'm not sure that they would for this reason, but hey, you can only try :)Good Luck.

  2. i woulden't just go to the cop shop they don't know which way is up, well in my town any way. either talk to the district firearms officer, and well basicly all of the reasons you just said you should tell him, hopefully if he is half helpfull he will tell you how to put that info in to a compelling letter to give to licensing services, allong with a cat d permit application i cant speak for qld but vic cant be a whole lot different. as i said before just collect up some evidence of your intentions, like bank statements cheques ect that are evidence that you have been contracted to cull. if you have the will youll find a way, i did with my c class. good luck

    EDIT

you have to prove that professional shooting contributes greatly to your income, you said that it it going to be a busniess so that could be a very good reason but that depends if that is abn busniess or charging a fee for your services.

  3. Just go down to the nearest police station and have a chat, it won't hurt and they will know everything.

I do not know otherwise, sorry.

  4. G'Day mate ive done some roo and boar hunting also in central n.s.w.I use a pump action Remington 308 patrol.A few times i have cleaned up a pack of roo's with 2 mags every shot a hit and kill.same with boars. All you need is a pump action but you have to be good at it.I can use a pump action just as fast as a semi auto and more accurate with it.I think farmers have the d category if they have pig's and roo's and also heli hunters have them also go to the police station and ask them it's the best way to get info.Im sure if it 's going to be yr job i guess you can get one.But it's going to be expensive, you will have to keep the job going to pay for it,because once you stop you lose that category.make sure you ask the firer arms officer he will know it's his job.cheers mate
