Does anyone know if I can obtain a Secret Security Clearance with bad credit? I do not have criminal background.

Also, where can I apply for a security clearance?

Thanks for your help,

Jennie

  1. First, you will never get a security clearance unless you need one. If that situation comes up, then the people you are working for that needs you to have one will help you to get one. But, you will not get one just because you want one. It can also be taken away, or reduced later if you no longer need it.

Can you get one with bad credit? Depends on what type of clearance you need. The higher the clearance that is needed, the more they dig into your background. If you just need to look at confidential information (not damaging to the country if it falls into "enemy" hands, but not something they want to have "leaked"), you probably can with bad credit. But if it is secret information that can be dangerous if in the wrong hands (I worked with radar frequencies, which, if the "enemy" knew, they could jam), they could consider you more likely to be "compromised" and disclose the information for a price, so they may not give you the clearance.

  2. You can't "apply" for a security clearance. A company must sponsor you on a program or work that requires a clearance. Obtaining a clearance with bad credit will be considered a risk. More than likely you will not be able to get a clearance until you've paid off all outstanding (late) debts, judgments, etc. Bankruptcies within the 7 years will automatically disqualify you from pursuing a security clearance.
