Question:

Obtaining a phD in us and financial support?

I live and study in Europe. I study Phisics, and I have one more year untill I will graduate. I am really preparing for studying abroad, working hard for the GRE, and my exams in general.

I would like to apply for a phD in physics or engineering in US next year, but my parents cannot afford to pay such a huge amount of money for this. I understood that a whole year would cost me something like 20.000$. At least for my family this is science fiction

How can I obtain a financial support form an University, in order to pay only a part of my studies abroad? can anyone give me an advice?

Thanks

  1. There is lots of financial support available for students who are seeking either their Masters or Ph.D. in the United States. Various organizations, employers and the universites themselfs will offer grants or scholarships.

Ph.D. students at U.S. universities typically receive a tuition waiver and some form of annual stripend since they are discouraged from engaging in external employment and as an F1 student, you wouldn't be able to work regardless. However, many students work as teaching assistants or research assistants, which is permitted for international Ph.D. students (on-campus of course).

Graduate schools increasingly encourage their students to seek outside funding; many are supported by fellowships they obtain for themselves or by their advisors' research grants from government agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Many Ivy League and other well-endowed universities provide funding for the entire duration of the degree program (if it is short) or for most of it.

The most common source of funding for postgraduate study is the department in which you plan to study. If you have not already done so, contact them and ask what financial aid options are available for international students. Then research non-university funding.

The link below also be may able to guide you in the right direction for sources of funding.

    Good luck.
