My mother was born in England and immigrated to Canada where I was born. I am in the middle of applying for a British Passport. However, I am wondering if I qualify for an European Union passport to. I was born in 1988 if that helps for legal reasons. Thank you.

  1. the passports have the same color , and they are indeed European passports, the color is a burgundy for all of them ;and each country has its own language on it; go to this page, and look and see pics of all passports in EU,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Un...

the year of your birth, has nothing to do, you will be issued the passport of EU,new era, new passport.

ps: before the EU, all passports had a different color, each country had its own color, now, all passport of EU are burgundy,my French passport says #Communité Européenne # on the top heading ...........

it did not say that before, and it was blue ..........it just said # République Française #

so, yes, there are European passports .

  2. There is no such thing as an "EU" passport.

A passport from any one of the 27 member states (including the UK) is a a passport that shows your status as a citizen of the Union.

Your UK passport will allow to live, work and move freely throughout the EU.

  3. The passport of a UK citizen is also an EU passport. However, the UK issues passports to some non-citizens also. People from Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Mann get UK passports but are not EU citizens. Their passports contain a special stamp explaining this.

Similarly, many people from Hong Kong and other former colonies are issued with special British passports which are not EU passports.

The situation is quite complicated and, I think, unique in the EU.

However, if your mother was actually born in England and held or holds a UK passport, or has a UK birth cert, you should be able to get a proper UK passport and become an EU citizen.

  4. i have never heard about an EU passport.

  5. Well it seems like you definately qualify for a British passport. There isn't really a EU passport in terms you are suggesting (you don't get a EU passport and a British one). What happens is when you get your British passport it will say "European Union" on the cover and that's the quickie guide to knowing if it's EU citizen (you can look more further into this via the link below).

  6. Britain is in the EU. A British passport is an EU passport.
