I am a newly married young woman, and my husband works as a freelancer. We want to look into getting health insurance, mostly for the fact that we are wanting to get pregnant in the next year, and just in case. So, I am totally lost as to how to go about doing this.. and what to look for/ask. I dont want to end up paying for something we dont want, or getting into something we cant get out of. Do they look at our credit score? Or health histories? How does it all work. If anyone could please unravel this mystery to me, it would be much appreciated. Im learning that there are many things that would have been helpful to learn in school, since neither of us have responsible parents who taught us these things. Thanks for the help!

  1. Most individual policies will have at least a 12-18 month waiting period for pregnancy-so make sure you know what the waiting period is BEFORE you get pregnant!

Go talk to an Independant agent to determine what you need medically and can afford financially as far as deductibles, co-insurance and co-pays go. Health history is primarily what they want to know about. Usually, they will ask about anything you have been diagnosed or received treatment for in the last 10 years. Chronic illnesses like cancer or diabetes will probably knock you off the individual insurability list. The agent will be able to tell you more about that.

If you are healthy, and don't go to the doctor much, high deductible plans are cheaper premium-wise. Plus if you get one that allows a HSA (Health Savings Account) you can put money into that and get the tax break-be sure to ask about that!

  2. When you purchase health insurance it is a unilateral contract, meaning you can cancel it anytime but the insurance company can't cancel you unless you lied on the application.

You need to talk to a Find an independent broker you can walk you thought the different companies and plan options for your state.

Try using yellowpages.com to search for health insurance brokers in your area.

Don't call your auto and home agent they specialize in property and causality insurance. You need someone that specializes in health insurance.

You need to be aware that maternity coverage usually requires a 6 to 9 month waiting period before conception can occur.

If you work for your husband you would be eligible for a group plan.

Your credit score has nothing to do with health insurance but your medical history does.

From what you have stated I would suggest you consider a high deductible health plan with an HSA it is less expensive than traditional coverage. I have a video you can watch on the left side of this web page http://www.insurancemadeeasy.biz/Assuran...

  3. The best place for you to start would be getting a job. That is how you usually get insurance. Or you can pay big bucks for it.
