Obtaining lost new car title, in place of lost one.?

Question

Purchased a car for cheap, and the previous owner had lost the title. The car now sits in my garage, with no title.

I'm located in southwest florida.

Now the question is, how do I obtain a title rightfully putting the car under my name?

have the individual that you bought the car from go to the county seat that they registered the car in and ask the dmv in the county that they had the car registered in for a duplicate title. they will have to prove who they are and pay a small fee. then they can sigh the title over to you with a bill of sale.

The previous owner has the burden to provide you with a merchantable title.  Go back and ask them to go thru the necessary "hoops" to get a title that they can then sign over to you.
