Question:

Occupational Therapy Assessment for dyspraxia - how can i get one done quickly??

my 6 year old son has autistic spectrum disorder. His teacher at school is very concerned about his lack of pencil control and his fine motor skills in general, so his paediatrician has referred him for a motor skills assessment with the OT department of the local hospital. However, a letter has arrived today telling me there is a 15 week waiting list for this.

Does anyone know where i could find a private OT in the area, or any other ways that i could bump the system and get seen sooner?

  1. Where is your area?  In most areas if you area willing to pay out of pocket, you should be able to find a private clinic.

  2. I would suggest you contact either The Dyspraxia Foundation or The Dyscovery Centre in Cardiff for advice.

My son has dyspraxia and so do I.

    Good Luck xx

  3. Try the yellow pages. OTs in private practice would be more than happy to evaluate your child, but double check that the schools are willing to pay for a private-practitioner assessment. It may take a second prescription from the doctor.

  4. If you are in the U.S. you can request and OT assessment through your school district. Put in writing and I believe within 15 days they either have provide the assessment plan to do the assessment or provide you with a notice of refusal of why they will not do the assessment. Otherwise search out a private clinic.. just ask around.. hard to say since I don't know where you are.. there are always plenty.
