How do oceans absorb CO2?

  1. CO2 in the air meets the ocean surface.  Some of it dissolves.

    When it does it pulls oxygen off the water molecules to form carbonate ion, CO3(-1).  That frees up two hydrogens, so the ocean becomes acidic.
