Octavio Dotel joins the Toronto Blues Jays on one-year deal
The chase for the 2011 World Series crown began the moment the San Francisco Giants claimed the 2010 World Series trophy. The winter break that followed saw many players from the free agency move to different clubs in the American League and the National
League.
Now with the New Year just around the corner it seems the off-season period is bustling with activity. Smaller adjustments are being made around rosters, and some clubs who were inactive during the winter meetings are beginning to flex their muscles. The
Toronto Blue Jays have been inactive in the trading market for quite some time, and they are believed to be considering a move in the market as the New Year sweeps in. The management has already made a good signing, and they are still trying to bring in some
good cover for the 2011 season.
Octavio Dotel is believed to be the Blue Jays new acquisition, and it comes at a time when many clubs are taking a breather from business in the free market. When general manager Alex Anthopoulos was asked to comment on the report, he declined, pointing
towards the team’s policy. According to the report, Dotel will get $2.75 million in 2011.  In addition to that he will be given the option to continue as a club player in 2012 on a $3.75 million pay increase. It is almost a done deal, pending a foreseeable
physical examination.
The player is set to replace closer Kevin Gregg. The club favourite has been struggling with his control, which is why Octavian is more likened for the position. The adjustment in the bullpen could be more flexible if Jason Frasor and David Purcey are allowed
to enter the competition for the closer’s position.
Anthopoulos told reporters after the game, "Everybody would like to have a clear-cut guy, but last Spring Training we had a competition for that role and we ended up with a guy who had 37 saves. I think everyone would tell you they'd like to have someone
in a defined role but if it ends up being a competition we're OK going into Spring Training with that scenario."
Gregg was declined two options to continue on as the club’s closer. That explains why Octavian is being brought in by the Blue Jays.
