October packed with golf
With the Ryder Cup over, if you think there will be no more golf till next year, you’re wrong. October is packed with golf tournaments around the world. PGA, European, LPGA and other big names in golf will hold various tournaments this month.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be held next week in Bermuda. The grand slam is an yearly off-season golf tournament that has the winners of four major championships going against each other.
More specifically, the winner of the Masters Tournament, U.S Open, The British Open and PGA Championship will play against each other.
This competition is organized by the PGA of America; however the prize money doesn’t contribute to the PGA Tour money list. Lucas Glover won the Grand slam last year, but he won’t be participating this year since he didn’t win a major. The players will tee
off on the Port Royal Golf Course on October 19th.
Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open
Another big golf event is the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open. Justin Timberlake has been very prominent in golf. He recently opened a golf course in Memphis.
Golf being one of his favourite past times, J.T made sure there is a golf spot in his hometown. Timberlake is also thinking of making the golf course eco friendly. Combing back to the tournament organized by the pop star, The Open will start on October 21st
in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Portugal Masters
With so much going on in the America’s, Europe can’t definitely back down. The Portugal Masters is up next on the European Tour and will take place on the Oceanico Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura, Portugal. The defending champion of the Masters, Lee Westwood,
won’t be returning this year since he re-injured his right leg last week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. On Sunday, the to-be-world number one announced that his next advent would be the World Golf Championships in China in November. On Halloween,
Westwood will take over the cat of golf, Tiger Woods and end his five and a half year reign of being world number one in golf. The Portugal Masters will tee off on October 14th.
CVS Pharmacy LPGA Challenge.
Won by Sophie Gustafson last year, this challenge will take place in Blackhawk Country Club in Danville California.
Gustafson beat Lorena Ochoa last year by four shots. Surprisingly, both of them were leading the third round, however Sophie’s 68 on the final day were enough for her fifth LPGA Tour Victory.
Lorena hadn’t won since five months and Gustafson was winless since 2003. It is evident on who needed more and she clearly earned it. Since Ochoa has retired, she will not play on the field this year.
Cristie Kerr didn’t make use of her third round lead on Sunday at the Navistar Classic and allowed Katherine Hull to take the victory.
As for the CVS Pharmacy LPGA Challenge starting on October 14th, Kerr will play along with Sophie, Paula Creamer and many others. Next week in the PGA Tour, the Sime Darby will also tee off in Malaysia. This will be a new 54-hole event on the
LPGA Tour this year.
Miccosukee championship
Up next on the Nationwide Tour is the Miccosukee Championship. This will take place on the Miccosukee Golf & Country Club Miami, Florida. Last year, Chad Collins won but he won’t be there to defend his title this year. Collins beat Won Joon Lee, Justin Smith
and Brian Smock by two strokes.
This is the second last full-field event on the Nationwide Tour. It’s this and then the inaugural Winn- Dixie Jacksonville Open and then the top 25 of the money list will be decided.
It is these top twenty-five players that will get their PGA Tour Cards for next year. Currently, Chattanooga Classic winner Scott Gardiner is on number 24 and James Hahn is on number 25. The Championship will start on October 14th.
With so many tournaments going on, the golf lovers are definitely in for a treat this October.
