I had this Indian dessert which was very different from anything I have ever had before. It was really good and when I asked, they said it was made from squash!! For real??? I find this hard to believe, I couldnt find anything on the web either.

LOL, this cant possibly be true!

  1. Yeah, I don't know the specific dessert you're talking about, but Indian cooks make dessert out of different things than Western cooks.  There are jillions of types of barfi, which  they translate as fudge, but it ain't chocolate.  Mostly barfi is nut flavored but can contain a variety of foods.  The other item it might be is a halwa.  Sometimes this has semolina and butter and saffron, but it's common to make it with carrots too.

  2. There are a lot of Indian sweets made from squash. If you describe it for me I'd be able to tell you what it was and probably give you a recipe too.

  3. Gretchen S is absolutely right, she gave you a great answer!

I am very impressed, give that girl 10 pts --- she deserves it!

By the way,  I think the dessert you ate was "Doodhi Halwa"

and it really is made from squash.  We also do have a dessert made from carrots (Gajjar Halwa) and a burfi made with potatoes!

Doodhi is known as bottle gourd or calalbash, a type of squash.
