Question:

Odd conure behavior?

My male, 7 year old green cheek conure taps the bottom of his cage, hiding under his food dish, but only when I come near his cage. His behavior towards me his sporadic and only happens on the second floor of my house. Go figure.

Specifically, he usually will crawl up on me, try to snuggle under my arm, or sometimes he just wants to lunge and VIOLENTLY bite me. I've tried spraying him with water, doing the drop trick, etc. and he's still aggressive. He breaks skin terribly. He taps his cage when he knows I put him in there for being bad.

Does anyone with a green cheek conure have any theories or answers to this behavior?

  1. All I can say if you spray him he probably thinks he's getting a bath.

Do you let him our for excercise? Is his cage big? Does he have toys to play with?  Mabye he is bored?

  2. And you think that by spraying him water will make him want to snuggle you? I am not so sure that he knows that you put him in his cage when he is bad either. But I think I know why he hides under his food dish when you come near him though. Go to a reputable bird store and talk to a professional, in the mean time I would hold off on the spray bottle antics.

  3. Your poor bird sounds lonely and mistreated. It doesn't sound like he has much out of the cage time. I suggest re-homing him to a person who will love him and give him plenty of attention, and someone who won't use abuse tactics by spraying him with a bottle. ..
