Question:

Odd shaped house, how do I calculate which side the house is facing or my bagua map using Feng Shui?

I have a condo and the front door leads to a narrow hallway (like a hallway to my living space, but not a communal hall for the whole building.) I'm thinking it's best to consider the "front door" as the landing of the stairs where you actually enter the home. What do you think, agree or disagree?

  1. there is no bagua map in fengshui, as what most western fengshui authors like you to believe. if there is such a thing, then casino owners would not hire fengshui experts to help design their buildings. the other reason is that, just imagine where are you going to put your bathroom, bec anywhere you put it, it will harm that aspect of your life.

you live in a condo, the main chi or energy comes in from the main door which is usually at the ground floor - the one facing the road. this door is usually measured by a compass, with you inside the building looking out the door - to know the facing degree of the door. then you use this to come up with a flying star chart. then you plot where is your unit in the chart. then you know what kind of chi/ energy your unti has. that is 1 way. then you can arrange the rooms in your unit with its furnitures by superimposing the chart on the blueprint of your unit aligning the chart, your unit/ blueprint with the 4 directions (which is also on the chart). to know more about flying stars, i think there are books available about this fengshui method.

in flying stars, chi can be good and it can be bad. to improve your life, you need to use the good and leave the bad alone, or use it for storage area or toilets.

then you can also enhance your fengshui by applying 8 mansions or east-west method made popular by lillian too. fengshui practitioners, usually use at least 2-3 fengshui methods to support an application or good fengshui of an area of the house.

another thing about condo, the farther away you are from the front main door (of the building), the less quality chi you receive. but sometimes, if you are very near to the door or to the road, it is also too strong for you that it can be bad. for example, in 8 mansions technique, it is not adviseable to use success/ money direction as this can be too strong for the person. it is usually advised to use the 2nd best direction/ location.

  2. Try the "Aspirations of the Bagua" which is a popular feng shui method in Hong Kong. You can use this map to feng shui your place regardless of which direction your building faces.

  3. The facing direction of a house is the side from which is entering the largest amount of light. It is considered as the most important area from which the Qi is introduced in a space. In an apartment is customary that the facing direction has more windows or balconies with the best views, while the main door can be in a completely different direction. We must avoid the mistake of associating the main door with the facing direction, albeit it is somewhat common in classical buildings and rural areas.

You should use the 8 Mansions or the Flying Stars systems of Feng Shui, as it is the most accurate way to apply Feng Shui correctly. You'll find all information you need here:

  4. Yes, I agree.  I would consider whichever door you normally and most frequently use to gain access to your home as the 'front door'.  This will either fall in the knowledge, career or helpful people sections of the bagua.  This site has very simple, but good tips and a bagua on Feng Shui - I'm all for keeping it simple!!
