Question:

Odds Maker: Chances Michelle Wie will win a major tournament?

Michelle Wie has been pro for a couple years now, and has nothing to show for it. She's only been able to enter major tournaments through exemptions, meaning she hasn't been able to qualify on her own. She jumped pro early, thinking she could qualify for mens' tournaments, but can't even make the cut on LPGA events. Now she's dropped out at Stanford and is plagued with injuries while players like Lorena Ochoa are tearing up the links. So will Michelle Wie ever fulfill her label as a golf prodigy?

  1. Odds: NEVER. She was better 5 years ago than she is today. She's got it all in her head. She's faking her wrist injuries, because all she wants is attention. She deserves to be getting it for all the wrong reasons, because she's not as good as advertised.

  2. No, I bet she never even qualifies for another major.  If she does she doesn't even come close to winning it.

  3. She came close to winning a major a couple of years ago.  Since then, though, she's backslid.  If she can get back to where she used to be, she will.

  4. She's still quite young... while I doubt that she'll live up to her early promise/hype, I won't be surprised if she makes a comeback and at least wins a few lesser LPGA tournaments, if not a major.

And speaking of Lorena Ochoa... man, she's really come into her own... if she stays on her present trajectory I expect her to eventually surpass Karrie Webb and Se Ri Pak in major wins, and perhaps even Annika.

  5. It'll be at least 3 years, maybe more, maybe never. Her main problem is that she and her handlers didn't realize that winning a golf tournament is a skill in itself, just like driving, chipping and putting.

All the great male and female players have extensive amateur records with many, many wins. Even though they won amateur events, they still learned how to win. How to win from ahead by a lot, from behind, when you're playing well, when you're playing bad, etc.

Michelle Wie has a pathetically small amateur record. I don't believe that she knows how to win. Look how she's fallen apart at crucial times at women's and men's events.

With more and more pressure on her to win, that'll slow her development even more. She doesn't have a great emotional makeup for the position that she occupies; young prodigy in the spotlight; so that'll slow her even more.

So her parents and handlers really might have ruined her but at least she and they got paid.
