Oddsmakers term Tiger Woods favourite to lift US Open title – Golf news
Oddsmakers at the Hilton Race and Sports Book in Las Vegas have termed Tiger Woods as the favourite to lift the 2011 US Open title.
After a gap of 12 months, the oddsmakers have shifted their attention towards Woods, owing to his perfect strokes and accurate driving in the 2011 Masters.
The 35-year-old pro lost the oddsmakers attention after his personal life scandals became public. He was the most betted upon player for the previous Masters, and was on his way to becoming the most successful player in the tournament, but his poor form
following the scandals hampered his progress.
However, on Tuesday, some surprising results by Woods attracted media attention when the Hilton Race and Sports Book, which has an in-house betting system, chose him as the possible winner of the next major.
US Open is scheduled for 16 – 19 June, 2011 at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. Woods has won the tournament thrice before, with his last victory coming in 2008, just before he injured his knee and ruled himself out of competitive golf
for some time.
Andrew Patterson, an oddsmaker at Las Vegas Sports Consultants said that Woods held the maximum odds for winning the tournament, owing to his superb game at the Masters.
He stated, “He did look good in two of four rounds. He held it together and did not blow up as he has the last several months. I think he is still overvalued, but when he wins again somebody will say, ‘I told you he could do it.’ And he will win again.”
He added that the world number four Phil Mickelson was the second favourite for the US Open and world number two Lee Westwood was third. Rory McIlroy was the fourth, while the defending champion Graeme McDowell shared the odds with the Masters winner Charl
Schwartzel.
Woods is back on the cards for the bettors, but will he be able to win the major or not, remains to be seen.
