Odlanier Solis: I am happy at my return from a long straining 13-month break – Boxing news
Odlanier Solis, the former WBC International and WBA Fedelatin heavyweight champion, is ready to make a huge comeback and in a recent interview shared his intense urge to get back in the ring after a 13-month long time lapse adding that he wants to again
become the number one contender Vitali Klitschko’s gold.
The Cuban Solis is expected to make a return in a bout against a to-be-determined pugilist on May 19, 2012 in a pay-per-view which will be jointly promoted by Kathy Duva of Main Events and Ahmet Oner of ARENA promotions.
Solis, 31, last fought Vitali in a 12-round bout with Ukrainian’s gold on the line. The bout was led undoubtedly by Solis and he would have easily won the bout via unanimous decision, if his injured knee would not have hampered his performance.
The bout ended in a very absurd way and most critics did not like the unanticipated ending of a much hyped skirmish. During the first round, Solis, who was all fired up and throwing heavy duty brain-rattling jabs to Vitali, received a huge powerful jab from
Dr. Steelhammer.
The punch connected Solis’ temple and when he was falling on the ring floor, as put forth by most media men, the surging Solis damaged his right knee substantially. The real scenario is not known to anybody but the eye witnesses later on revealed that Solis
got the knee injury most probably while controlling his balance from Vitali’s thunderous jab.
It was that particular moment when Jose Guadalupe Garcia, the bout-referee intervened and halted the bout awarding it as a technical knockout win to Vitali. Solis, also known as ‘La Sombra’, afterwards face a strenuous crucial one-year rehabilitation period
in which he underwent three surgeries on the same right knee.
The Cuban heavyweight pounder is considered as ‘a pugilist capable enough to obliterate the Klitschko rule’ but since he was away from the ring nobody noticed his potential and ability.
Solis, the six-time Olympic gold medallist, was pretty happy at his return, and while putting forth the media his feelings said, “It feels great to be finally back in action and working on my comeback. The last twelve months have been h**l with a lot of
setbacks but now I’m ready to go at it again.”
Odlanier while commenting about his sparring partner said, “Of course, it adds some extra motivation to work with a great champion like Miguel Cotto. We have lots of fun at camp but, of course, we are both very focused and working hard on our goals.”
It must be kept in mind that Solis’ comeback had been announced several times before but the Cuban pounder was unable to make a comeback. Solis has been in a total 18 bouts and collected his careers only loss from Vitali.
