  1. Of course that depends to some extent on where you draw the "fairly simple" line. It can also depend upon the house rules.

    I use the Braun +- count. (+1 for 2,3,4,5 or 6 and -1 for 10 or Ace.)

    I have seen evidence that the Hi-Opt I count (+1 for 3,4,5 or 6 and -1 for 10) is more effective so that would be my recommendation if you are learning counting for the first time.

    The Thorp Ultimate count is probably the most effective, but I don't think anyone would call it relatively simple.

  3. Look up "unbalanced" counting systems. These are the simplest because they do not require you to compute a true count, you just have to keep a running count. The KO count is the most popular one I can think of off the top of my head.

  4. just keeping it simple is the key.  using your memory is the key, just knowing what's been discarded.  Knowing your odds is a key factor also.
