  1. Actaully you can do a pretty good job of spelling using only math if you are really good at it and can write software!

I think different subjects are best for different people to specialize in, and everyone should have a base level of everything.

  2. Not only the hard sciences, but ALL the academics AND arts are being neglected. Teachers are so overburdened with functions that should properly belong to social workers, nutritionists, s*x educators, police officers, public health workers, psychologists, -- not to mention parents -- that their isn't enough time left in the school day for simply TEACHING. It's not the will to teach hard science (or other subjects) isn't there, it's that our public education can't seem to shed all these non-academic functions. The only way to crowd it all in is longer school days, longer school years, and the tax squawkers are too selfish to provide that level of funding.

  3. Math. The only thing you can't do without math is spell.

  4. No.  You are basically suggesting that the hard sciences are more important than the soft.  However, I would argue that things like history, english, geography, arts, etc. are much better at teaching critical thinking skills, communication skills and relational skills.  The world revolves around these skills.  More people need and use these skills on a daily basis.

Math, science and technology are very important, but not more important than the others.  We must continue to offer a broad based education.

  5. First comes reading and writing. Next is history. Then all the rest.
