  1. The Regionale or as I  call 'em - the "chicken trains" because they stop too often. Long rides go on for ever. They are fine if you don't have a limit to your vacation (like when i used to back pack Italy). They stop at off beat little towns... one after another.

  2. Eurostar (and Eurostar Alta Velocità, Eurostar City, T-Biz) are the more expensive; then Intercity/Eurocity, Cisalpino (Italian-Swiss company)

The above are intended for longer distance trip.

Diretto, Regionale, Interregionale are for local transport.

Generally, you have to use one of the firsts if you need to move between distant cities (for instance, Milan-Rome, Turin-Milan, etc).

The trains on the second list do stops in smaller cities/towns (faster trains don't).

An example: if you need to go from Milan to Novara (near 50 Km) it'll take 30 minutes by Intercity and 35 by Interregionale; but Intercity costs more. since those cities are close, Intercity is not the right choice.

There also are Night Trains, for longer routes.

  3. the intercity and the regionalI know the naples train you can get an all day ticket for E3. This takes you from the burb to the city.

  4. Hi! The cheapest trains are the REGIONAL ones, you can visit the website www.trenitalia.it to check timetables. You recognize this kind of trains because there's a big R next to the details of the train (time etc...).

    Bye!
