Of mice and men original quote?

I was wondering when the quote "the best laid plans and men often go awry" was first written down and by who

(i think it was robert burns around the 1700's)

I'm trying to quote it in an essay so if you know how i could reference it as well that would be brilliant! Cheers

  1. You're right, it comes from a poem by Robert Burns in 1785 called "To a mouse"

    The original quote is 'The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft agley'
