Of the LEGAL Americans in the work force, what percent earn money & DON'T have a valid drivers licence?

Many jobs require a valid driver's license as a condition of employment. Others may not. If you don't live in an area that has adequate public transportation, having a driver's license may be essential, just to get to work.

I'm guessing that more people who live in urbanized areas may not need a driver's license to get to work and may have employment where driving a vehicle is not part of the essential job duties. But what portion of the work force is like this such that they don't need a license, or have been rejected a license and are able to make a living without one?

Additionally, what kind of jobs do these people take where the driver's license question is irrelevant? I imagine there are many office jobs that require no driving, but again, getting to work is the question.

I am not particularly speaking to the issue of illegal aliens and driver's licenses. I am interested in statistics on LEGAL Americans without licenses but gainfully employed and making a living.

  1. There probably aren't any real accurate statistics on how many are driving without a license since no one would report themselves for doing it. Many New Yorkers don't get licenses since they take cabs and the subway. (Think major east coast cities; the western cities don't have the infrastructure.)I've know women who relied upon their husbands to drive them everywhere so they never got licenses just state issued IDs.

There may be statistics at some DMVs on how many tickets are issued to unlicensed drivers but even that would be skewed by the number of folks who had licenses but had them revoked for infractions. Insurance companies may also have the data but doubt they will share it with you.

  2. Not everyone needs or even wants a drivers license.  Of course they're employed.  They even get back and forth to work.

You can't figure out how no license people get to work?  Public transportation would be one, car pooling with co-worker is another.  Being dropped off and picked up by family member who have same work hours.

My sister-in-law never had a drivers licence.  She made arrangement with co-worker and that's how she got make and forth work for years.  She finally forced to get a drivers licence because her husband died.  Reason for not getting a drivers license was because she was scared.  She took her driving lessons and now has her licence.  By the way she always had a good job and is still there.  Only difference, she now drives herself to and from work.  Been driving for years now, but still doesn't like it.  She finally made it to her sisters who lives in the suburbs.  Quite a ride for her considering her fears.

If people need to work (which most do) in order to service, the will get there and that would be via public transportation.

The no license people have to turn down jobs that require a license, as simple as that.

You also have to remember, a lot of people can't afford to purchase a car.  You sound like you have at lease three Beemers sitting in your driveway.

Does this give you any insight on how people get to and from work and even have a "good paying" job without having a drivers licence?

Hay man life still goes on with out a license.

  3. I am 25 years old and I got my license for the first time in June  2007. During the time when I wasn't driving, I furnished a state I.D. which was issued to me at my local DMV. It looks very much like a driver's license except the color was different and it expired 4 years from the day I got it.
