I don't mean, Hopkins, Toney, McCallum and other guys who were already considered very good - I mean the guys who, when he fought them, were called "bums", not a real challenge, etc. - a lot of them turned out to have pretty good careers; Clinton Woods, Eric Harding, Julio Gonzales, and the like.

  1. I guess right now you would have to say Clinton Woods as he is currently one of the light-heavy weight champs......................

In Roy's prime it may have been Montel Griffin, he was the first fighter I saw give Roy some trouble during that time period.

  2. You know Jones Jr. destroying Montell Griffin in 1997 in one round was a focused Jones Jr. He got disqualified in the first fight he was winning at the time. Griffin did give Jones some fits in the first fight but Jones Jr. figured him out. He came in the rematch with intentions of avenging his DQ.  The first left hook was nice indication of how it would end and it did end like that.

  3. I would say Virgil Hill,  he had an outstanding record at the time of 43-2 but he was 34 & on the downside of his career.   However roy destroyed him with a body shot.

A different answer is on the opposite of that who was the worst guy Roy ever fought?   Antonio Tarver,  he threw a lucky punch KO'd Roy & has absoultely nothing since.   Lost to Glen Johnson & got destroyed by Bernard Hopkins.   He is the biggest bum I've ever seen!!!!

  4. I will never ever forget the savage beating of richard hall.

hall went on to give the guy at the time everyone said roy was ducking (darius M) 2 of the roughest fights of his career before he (darius) then went on to lose to gonzalez whom roy beat also.

  5. I thought Virgil Hill had a shot at an upset....thought the jab coupled with Hill's height would have given RJJ trouble.

    I must have forgot...

  6. I would have to go with Clinton Woods, and Montell Griffin as a close second.  I go with Woods because today, he is ranked by everyone as being one of the top 5 light heavyweights in the world and when he fought Jones, he was taken to school.  Jones dominated Woods for six rounds until Woods' corner had seen enough, so they threw in the towel.  That was the only time that Woods has ever been stopped.

  7. for some reason everybody always said RJJ only faught bums, but as he would say "I MADE THEM LOOK LIKE BUMS"...lol

the best fighter he faught if u ask me was Montell Griffin....I highly doubt anybody was calling Griffin a bum at the time, but he gave Roy some problems in the 1st fight, in fact, he was winning on the cards at the time of the DQ in their first fight on 1 of the judges cards, and he was only down 1 point on the other 2 cards....

Griffin beat a well know James Toney twice before fighting Roy, and he did it in only his 15th pro fight.....

  8. Thulani "Sugarboy"  Malinga was never considered a bum....he went on to briefly hold (twice) the wbc super middleweight crown.

  9. toney

  10. i just think roy jones was lucky to be in the right place on the right time. he was like robert horry of the nba who won 6 nba championships because he was simply at the right situation.
