Both the Ukraine and Romania are well known for their poor air quality indecies due to the proliferation of heavy industry in these nations--oil refining in Romania and steel production in the Ukraine. My question is, on the whole, which of these two Eastern European countries looked dirtier to you? Which one felt poorer and more backward?

  1. There is no doubt that Ukraine is more poluted and impoverished.

Romania had to meet standards to become a part of the EU, and Ukraine has many steps to take to even qualify for consideration by the EU.

I have lived in both countries (Ukraine most recently), and I find Romania to be much "cleaner". Ukraine's environmental policies are lacking.

  2. i havnt been to either but based on research i would say ukraine.  at least romania joined the eu and is slightly richer and less polluted

  3. So I have lived in both places and the EU has nothing to do with Romania being less impoverished. If anything it is hard for Romania ever since they joined, yes more people can come, and they are apart of the EU but all the prices on everything are going up and the people and not making any more money.

So if you take Kiev and Bucharest, Kiev is so much nicer and people are very well off.

but it is hard to say, because you really have to go to the small towns. and since I have been to both I would say it is a 50/50.

I think both of these places are so great, i dont think Impoverished is the right word, they are great places! I would say that you should go, and if you can stay longer than just a trip you will also learn to love the people like I have!!
