Electric, because it creates the fewest greenhouse gas emissions.  Next-best is hybrid gas/electric.

Hydrogen is tricky.  It has the potential to be the most environmentally friendly, but we don&#039;t have any good way of getting the hydrogen fuel yet.  The only efficient way to get it at the moment is from natural gas, and the process emits as much CO2 as burning gasoline.  Theoretically you could get the hydrogen from water, but breaking the atomic bonds requires a ton of energy.

electric is not only best for planet (lowest pollution &amp; consumption of non-renewable resources);

but also best driving experience, quiet, smooth, smell free;

and cheapest economically, simpler to mass produce, lower maintenance, cheaper to refuel (no scarce fuel security issues)

and the electric vehicle technology to meet most of our personal transport needs is available now.

Hybrid - best right now, available at reasonable cost

Electric - will become the best for the city fairly soon

Fuel cell - will become the best for long trips, lots of development needed, also need distribution sytem for hydrogen; a ways off

I think Bob&#039;s answer is the most accurate.  But global warming and resource depletion problems will not be solved by merely switching to cleaner cars.  We need to drastically simplify our lifestyles so as to preserve essential resources for future generations and cut global warming.
