Off-season spending extravaganza has not worked for Miami Marlins, admits David Samson - MLB Update
Finally the Miami Marlins’ officials give signals of regretting their off-season spending extravaganza. As the season pans out exactly the opposite of their expectations, the president David Samson concludes that strategy has failed.
The players which were acquired as a result of buying have not done even the fraction of what the fans fancied at the start. Against the backdrop of dismal performance this year, one can expect sweeping changes in the club once the season ends.
Dawning of the year was taken as beginning of a new era for the Marlins.
Inclusion of stars on the roster, with new uniforms and the inauguration of the new Marlins Ballpark had added to the uncanny sentiments of the fans that would not accede to any judgement less than their club’s becoming the most dominant in the National
League East Division.
By adding the shortstop Jose Reyes in the line-up, it was believed that their offensive loop-holes have been addressed. Similarly, their bullpen which traditionally has been prone to meltdowns late in the innings was perceived differently after Heath Bell
joined it.
Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen had always asserted that Bell will protect the lead for the club, regardless of the situation he comes under to throw. He expected him to record saves for the club.
All that was envisaged from these players has not actually happened. This is paving the way for indignation of the owner Jeffrey Loria. After this season, the coaching staff may be changed. Equally bright is the possibility of payroll cuts by the team.
“I think it’s going to be an interesting October, a little different than the October we envisioned,” Samson stated. “Jeffrey’s going to look at everything. I mean, he’s angry, and he should be. It’s hard to think you put a plan together and almost every
part of the plan does not work out, either by injury or non-performance.”
Furthermore, Samson puts light on the anger prevailing in the club-house after not even an iota of what was planned before has materialised.
Certainly, the players will be taking the statement by the president as a sign of the disappointment that has been caused by them.
Regardless of what happens with them at the end of the season, they will be trying to improve and make sure they take the winning percentage of the team to a respectable level.
