This will be my first time to Scotland. I am an American who has lived in England for a few years now. I am going with my husband and a few friends to Glasgow for four days. I have researched it on the internet, but do you have any good personal ideas on places I should visit while there? We are up for almost anything.

  1. Also try the Burrell collection in the south side, it has amazing works of art and ancient artifacts.

  2. A Glasgow local made this video "A Three Minute Tour of Glasgow" which should be helpful for you: http://www.tripfilms.com/Travel_Video-v9...

He points out good pubs, restaurants, shopping areas, landmarks.

    Have a good trip!

  3. Good places to visit:

    - Go to the Glasgow Science Centre.

    - Go shopping.

    - Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

    - Glasgow Transport Museum.

    It'll put some more up...

Hope this helps, have a nice time there.

  4. Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, offers fabulous shopping, crowded pubs and clubs and terrific restaurants. Art lovers will also find plenty to capture their imagination, as the city is home to more than 30 galleries and museums, including the world famous Burrell Collection and Saint Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art. Naturally it is also possible to visit the coast from Glasgow or discover the rich history of the region by exploring neighbouring cities and villages.

Architecture: Many of the city’s buildings date back to the 19th century, when Glasgow was the trading centre of Scotland. Nowadays, the city palaces of yesteryear serve as offices and department stores. Enjoying both architecture and the contents of the buildings is the theme of The Lighthouse in the heart of Glasgow, with a variety of dynamic exhibitions on art and architecture.

Shopping: Glasgow is the largest shopping city of Great Britain after London and offers excellent shopping. Visit the pedestrianised shopping precincts Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street or one of the indoor shopping malls, such as the Buchanan Galleries or St Enoch Centre.

Food and drink: Whisky, preferably single malt, is the drink of choice in Scotland. A visit to a distillery is certainly worthwhile. Like in England, the Scots enjoy a hearty breakfast with bacon and eggs, whereas dinner usually consists of a wide selection of meats. Salmon is also widely available. Mutton lovers must certainly try the traditional Haggis.

Getting Around: Glasgow has one of the most advanced, fully integrated public transport systems in Europe. Glaswegians are very reliant on buses, the underground, and the local railway network that cross the city and link it to the suburbs. The Travel Centre at St Enoch Square (+44 (0) 141 226 4826) is a good starting-point for general Glasgow-wide travel information.

Underground: The Glasgow Underground has twin tunnels providing a circular service linking 15 stations. Trains are frequent (approximately one every five minutes), and tickets are cheap, but must be bought in advance of the journey either from a machine or from the ticket office at the station.

Rail: An extensive network of regular and frequent local rail services operates in Glasgow, its suburbs and the West of Scotland. Most suburbs and towns within this area are accessible by train. If you are staying outside Glasgow and do not want to drive into the city, you can use the 'Park-and-Ride' system, which allows free parking at suburban rail stations, where you then continue your journey by train. CCTV protects most of the parking facilities - the Park-and-Ride also operates at four Glasgow Underground stations.

  5. I would recommend a visit to The Transport Museum and Kelvingrove Art Gallery - http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/ in the West End of the City which is also worth a visit whilst you are there as there are loads of lovely shops, cafes, pubs etc - http://www.glasgowwestend.co.uk/

If you are visiting at the weekend then try to go to The Barras market - http://www.glasgow-barrowland.com/market...

Glasgow is the largest and best retail centre in the UK outside of London so shop till you drop! There are many fantastic pubs, clubs and restaurants too. Check out this link if you need any more info - http://www.seeglasgow.com/

Hope you all have a great time and enjoy your visit to Glasgow!

  6. I will take you on a tour in Glasgow!

  7. good luck! thanks for your opinion!

    have a wonderful trip.

  8. Tough question. If you are into architecture you should check out Glasgow Cathedral for sure. There are also good museums and art galleries like the Museum of Transport, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, The Gallery of Modern Art and many more similar places. If the nightlife is more your thing then there are also plenty of clubs that play a lot of different music like Rock/Metal, R&B, House/Techno etc. There are also places for shopping like the Buchanan Galleries and the St. Enoch Centre. Plenty to see and do here!

  9. Spend a day exploring the major shopping streets, which are Buchanan Street and Argyle Street.  You'll find tons of lovely shops (Fraser's, shoe stores, coffee shops) along both.  Waxy O'Connor's (http://www.waxyoconnors.co.uk) is a nice Irish bar with kind of an unusual layout, so there are lots of wee private seating areas.  (It reminds me of having a pint under the roots of a tree, in a nice way.)  There's also the Princes Square (http://www.princessquare.co.uk) on Buchanan Street, which is an indoor mall that has tons of shops and nice places to eat.  I recommend Ming's for a nice Chinese or Buzzy Ware's (ground floor) for a great American burger.

At the corner of Buchanan Street and Argyle Street is a nice bar called Sloan's.  You can access it from the Argyle Arcade (It's lovely to window shop in the Argyle Arcade - there are tons of jewelers and watchmakers inside, plus it's an 'indoor mall' type place out of the rain.)

A trip to the Horseshoe Bar on Drury Lane (off West Nile Street) is worth it.  Even though it's a local place, all of the newspaper reporters used to hang out there and the bar itself is, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the longest in the UK!

If you want to head up Sauchiehall Street (at the top of Buchanan Street) there are tons of shops along there as well.  The Universal (off of Bath Lane - http://www.list.co.uk/place/101242-the-u... is a great pub with nice food for lunch or an early dinner.  While you're up that way, check out Walkabout and Molly Malone's (http://www.malonesglasgow.co.uk).

Spend a day in Glasgow's West End as well.  Take the Underground, also known as the Clockwork Orange, also known as the Subway.  Ask for a "Discovery Ticket" - which offers a day's unlimited travel on the Subway for just £2.50 after 09.30, Monday to Saturday/all day on a Sunday. Ride to Hillhead Station and check out Ashton Lane (take a left when you exit the station and take another left just past the Scream pub) - there are lots of nice pubs, restaurants and a movie theatre down this quaint wee street.  (http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/images_ash...  I recommend the Ashoka for nice Indian food.  You can also access the museums in the West End (take a left when you exit the station and walk to the end of the street and turn left) or the Botanic Gardens (take a right when you exit the station and they're on the corner, 500 yards away) from Hillhead Station.

If you have the time, take a day trip to Edinburgh and check out the Royal Mile.  Ask for the GroupSave ticket - 3 or 4 travel for the price of 2 between Glasgow and Edinburgh, which means that up to four of you can travel for just £19.60 total (£4.90 each).  It's not a long journey and the trains run every 15-20 minutes from Glasgow Queen Street.

I would avoid Sauchiehall Street in the evenings unless you're into the clubbing/crazy youth scene.  That said, there are tons of bars and pubs along there, a few with good venues for live local music, such as Firewater and Capitol.  If you're into the club scene you can check out the Garage - beware of the 16 year olds posing as 18 year olds!  :-)

I hope you enjoy your trip to Glasgow...I moved here from the States.  My husband (who is Scottish) and I love to bash around the town together, and these are some of our favourite places.
