I bought a TB from a horse camp. He is 19 yrs old, and someone asked me if he is off the track, and I said no, and they told me to look at the inside of his upper lip, there should be a number tattooed and that will tell you. well he did have a tattoo of the number 962 or 462. I was wondering if anyone out there could give me info as far as how he did or some way to look up how he raced back in his day?

  2. if he is tattooed then is is off the track. I'm not to sure if you can find that info out but try searching for it online. Type in something like TB track number search or something like that.

  3. A lip tattoo does not necessarily mean he came from the track. All it means is that he was registered with the Jockey Club, it's his very own unique registration number. The registration number is longer than three digits - I think it's like seven or eight numbers with a letter in the beginning, indicating the year of birth.

If you can read the entire tattoo, you can find out all about him by contacting the Jockey Club. I'm sure they'd be willing to help you find out whether or not he raced, and if so, how well he did.

  4. Thoroughbreds have a letter that designates the year of foaling and a set of number which is his registration number for that year.

At his age it can be a little difficult to read the tattoo but you need the letter and all of the numbers.

You can contact The Jockey Club information service and they can help.
