Offensive Coordinator Mike Johnson will look to turn around San Francisco 49ers season
The San Francisco 49ers will be looking for any kind of inspiration that might help turn around their dismal start to this season, and they are hoping that spark will come in the form of newly appointed offensive coordinator Mike Johnson.
Johnson received the assignment after former offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye was fired in the wake of the 49ers week three loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Although 49er fans will be screaming for radical changes in results, Mike Johnson has pointed out that radical changes won't be made to the offensive system currently in place in San Francisco.
"You have a certain way we've been operating for the last 1½ years and you can't go in in one week and change the entire playbook," Johnson said. "There will be some different things, but I don't think we'll make a bunch of wholesale changes. We're going
to take the same core plays, the same core concepts and make them look a little different to the opponent and then see if we can have a different result."
If Johnson, and head coach Mike Singletary hope to get different results on the scoreboard, they will need to get better results on the field from their offensive stars, quarterback Alex Smith and running back Frank Gore.
"Alex has played OK...He has not played great, and that's why I think our offense has not played to that level. In saying that, we have to give him better opportunities as coaches to make sure that he is successful. That's what I'm going to try to do with
the entire offensive staff."
The San Francisco 49ers currently have the 27th ranked rushing offence. Only the Carolina Panthers have scored less points after three games so far this season.
The 49ers have started this season with three straight losses and play the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday.
