Offensive drills to improve score
Volleyball is a team sport and like any other team sport it requires a team effort to make a win. However, the effort that needs to be put in the game should start a long time before any volleyball team makes it to the court. In order to perform at maximum
efficiency, players should regularly practice to maintain and hone their skills.
This is where the coach comes in. A coach must provide the players with every opportunity that would work towards increasing their ability and efficiency on the court when the actual game starts. Not only that, it is the responsibility of a coach to enable
the players to capitalize on their strengths and work on their weaknesses.
The following quote by Homer Rice explains what a good coach must do to get the maximum possible results from the players, “You can motivate by fear, and you can motivate by reward. But both those methods are only temporary. The only lasting thing is self
motivation.”
There are specific drills that coaches can make their players practice which would enable them to improve certain skills and aspects of the game such as the offense or the defence of a team. In case the team lacks on the offensive side, the following drills
will go a long way in improving their attacking skills.
The first offensive drill that we are going to talk about is the Four Corner Hitting drill. This is a very effective drill that enables a team to execute a targeted attack at the weak areas of the opposing team. If the players can excel at aiming the ball
at the weak line of the opposing team’s defence, they stand a good chance of scoring points.
In order to carry out the Four Corner Hitting drill properly, a coach must line up the players on one side of the net. On the other side of the net, the coach must place large boxes on four corners or any other objects that can be easily visible. The coach
must then pass the ball to each of the players in turn and as the ball comes towards a player, the coach must call out the box or the object that the player must hit with the ball. In this way, the players will be able to learn how to react quickly while at
the same time target their attack towards a specified place on the other side of the court.
If the coach puts a point for every right hit, the motivation of the players will increase and they will be able to perform a lot better during the drill. Not only that, this drill must be practised several times if the players are to get a hang of what
they need to do.
The other offensive drill that a coach can make the players do is called the Setting Accuracy Drill. This drill enabled the player to set the ball where they wish to irrespective of the direction of the incoming ball.
The players must be lined up near the net while another player should be standing on the side of the court, preferably on a chair. The coach should throw the ball to each of the players while the players should aim at setting the ball to the player on the
chair.
These are some drills that a coach can make the players perform in order to improve efficiency.
