Offer from New York Mets during negotiations revealed by R.A Dickey -MLB Update
R.A Dickey has unveiled that he was offered $20 million for a two-year deal by the New York Mets, before he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Dickey could not finalise an agreement with the Mets, despite his desire to stay with the same organisation.
Right after the 2012 season ended, Dickey stated openly that he wanted to play the upcoming seasons for a team, where he won Cy Young Award for the first time in his career.
Similarly, the Mets’ officials were equally interested in retaining him.
However, their inability to meet asking price of Dickey led to the failure of talks.
Being a financially weak club, it was unaffordable for them to grant $31 million to Dickey for three years.
Dickey will be disappointed for having failed to continue his expedition with an organisation, which provided him a platform to redefine his identity in the major league.
Before joining the Mets, Dickey was considered a below average major league hurler.
Grabbing the opportunity of starting games for New York with both hands, he recorded 20 wins in the last season.
As a result, he has suddenly become one of the highly rated pitchers around the Major League Baseball.
The Mets cannot benefit from his services from now onward as he has joined the rotation of Toronto.
It will be interesting to know whether he keeps his sublime form intact while playing for the Blue Jays.
Dickey has complained that the first offer made by the Mets was extremely low.
"I think it might have been the equivalent of somebody offering $1 -- 'Let's just get it going to see where we stand,' " Dickey said."I didn't necessarily take that first offer as a convincing slap in the face or anything. I wasn't looking for a fight after
that. I just thought that was an arbitrary offer that they made and, 'Let's get the ball rolling and we'll see where we stand at the end of this thing.' That's how it's done, so there wasn't any acrimony to it."
Dickey did not take indifference toward his contract extension by the Mets to heart. Instead, he continued progressing in the negotiations normally.
Finally, he was able to convey to the Mets that he is worth more than that he was being considered by them.
Certainly, his acquisition by Toronto at $25 million for two-year has proven this.
