Question:

Offer price below asking price?

I want to make an offer on a car tomorrow.

The car is selling for $22,500.00 and the owner says the car is in perfect condition

the kbb values are

Excellent: 22,895

Good: 21,660

Fair: 20,070

However, my budget is around $19,000-20,000.00

When I make an offer for the car how much below the price should I make the offer for?

How much below the offer price would be considered insulting??

  1. I would try this.

Tell them you like the car and you're ready to buy. But explain that you only can offer 19-20k because of your budget.

I just bought a car today. It worked for me. =p

  2. You may have some leverage in this situation. Trying to sell a car at that price as a private seller isn't easy.

Don't know the make or the year, but I would offer somewhere close to $17-18,500ish to start. If they decline(which is possible, but it still is only slightly less than your low end limit), then wait. If they don't get any other action, they will come back to you. Negotiate from there to a maximum of your limit. If they don't come back to you, then you lose nothing, because, as you said, you can't afford their price anyway.

If you REALLY have to have THIS car, then good luck to you. To be honest, however, at the price you have to work with, you can get a whole range of very nice and functional cars, and have quite a bit left over for other items...LIKE GAS!!!

Don't worry about insulting him.  That is why men are better at negotiating. We don't care about being an A$$ when we have to.

Just make an offer and negotiate your way UP to what you want to pay.  If he says no - you'll never see him again.

    Good Luck...

  4. I say don't buy it.

You can buy a brand new car for that much money

I wouldn't trust buying a car from a private dealer why because the car could suck and you don't get warranty

if you do buy a car get it from a dealer you can give him your offer on a car and he will reduce the price mabye and you will get a warranty

I use to sell cars of my own and to tell you the truth i wasn't fair i just told people the good things about my car and let them find out and fix the problems of the car on there own
