I have been offered a position as a sales and marketing manager at a very prestigious health club chain.

I have been a sales rep for years now, but not really managed people as such. I am confident, but really not sure whether I can follow through. I really want too. I will have to provide marketing plans daily, and it will be quite stressful I think. Not sure what to do, feeling sick about it but need the good m oney they have offered me!

  1. My work experience has been you never know until you try. I am amazed at what I can pull off sometimes. Start educating yourself immediately about the marketing plans, they will give you somewhat of a chance on the learning curve, strive for excellence, don't demand respect from your crew, but command it. Treat them fairly and go to bat for them and you will soon gain their loyalty. A loyal crew can CYA.

  2. You'll never know how you do until you give it a try.  I would suggest learning about the place and the various positions there, before making any changes.

Don't be a micro manager.  Delegate and treat your employees like adults and with respect.  If you trust them, they will usually come through.  There seems to always be a few you have to check up on, but that's normal in any job.

Consider reading some books on managing techniques, if you feel you must.  You probably won't need them, if you're good with people.

Now, go for it!  Good luck!

  3. If they offered you the job they obviously believe you have the capabilities to perform the job. The key with people is to give respect, and respect will be given to you. Yes they know there is a learning curve but as stated they believe you can do it, so now only you need to believe, and go in open minded. Good luck you will do fine
