what is this thing?? It holds a fat dry erase type marker and when you write with it it makes a buzzing sound, but doesn't really seem to do anything.

There is a switch mechanism that is pressure sensative that the bottom edge if the marker sits on so it will create this buzzing. It has been sitting on my desk for 3 months I have never used it and have no idea what it is.

  1. I can only take a guess. Maybe it is for stopping the ink drying up while you write with the marker. or if you hold it lightly it might give the ink line a style. has it got a name or company printed on it if so google it see what comes up.

  2. It's a Mimio stylus.

You need the receiver part that goes on the whiteboard/wall to make the stylus useful as anything but a buzzing marker holder.  :)

The Mimio system turns any whiteboard (or even a plain wall) into an interactive whiteboard (a la SmartBoard) when you are projecting the computer on that surface, and can alsio just capture/record your pen strokes to a computer.

The "buzzing" is an ultrasonic signal the stylus emits for the receiver to sense where you touch the stylus to the surface, and where you move it to.  It also holds a whiteboard marker so it can draw real ink on the real whiteboard as it puts virtual ink on the computer's virtual whiteboard.

There is a plain plastic stylus (it may be an insert for the stylus device, I don't remember) to make it just a mouse and not a pen.  You would also use that plastic insert/stylus if you are projecting on a wall and not a whiteboard.
