  1. A mantle is an ecclesiastical garment in the form a very full cape which extends to the floor, joined at the neck, that is worn over the outer garments. It is similar to a robe but sleeveless and often open in the front, worn as an outer covering. It is also called "The Coronation Mantle", which is decorated with precious gems stitched with gold thread worn especially by monarch during their coronations.
