Ogilvy lastest to sign up for the Australian PGA Championship
Geoff Ogilvy has decided to return to his native Australia to compete in the Australian PGA Championship on 9 December at Hyatt Regency Coolum in Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Ogilvy’s only victory on home soil was the 2008 Australian PGA Championship, although he also won a number of other tournaments as a pro including the 2006 US Open.
While many golfers take the winter off, the Australian PGA Championship has special meaning for Ogilvy.
''It's a really cool place the Hyatt Coolum. I won there a couple of years ago so it's got a special place in my golfing schedule,'' said Ogilvy, who won the PGA in 2008. ''The Australian PGA is obviously one of Australia's most historic tournaments, and one we can all bring our families to and have a great week.”
Ogilvy won the SBS Championship in Hawaii back in January, but then failed to reach the top ten in any of his tournaments since until last week at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Massachusetts, where he tied for second behind Charley Hoffman.
“At the Deutsche event last week I played really well actually,” said Ogilvy. “I hit the ball well, I putted well, I just got outplayed by Charley Hoffman on the last day.”
Joining Ogilvy will be the tournament’s defending champion, Robert Allenby, who also won in 2000 and 2001.
Americans John Daly and Fred Couples have also announced their participation in Australia. Daly hasn’t won a major tournament since the 1995 British Open, and Couples hasn’t won a major since the 1992 Masters Tournament, but both could challenge for a top-ten finish at the tournament.
Also hinting that he could return home for the PGA Championship is 22-year-old Jason Day. Day is currently sixth in the FedEx Cup standings and will be playing in the Tour Championship on 26 September.
