I am moving to Ohio next week. I do not have a motorcycle licence, looking at the ohio motorcycle website is confusing to me. To get an ohio motorcycle licence, do I need to take a basic riders course? I am confused by this temporary licence and endorsement process. What are the steps?

  1. I live in Ky now but for the past 26 years I lived in Ohio. The first thing you do is get the permit book, study it a day or two, and then take the written permit test. You can actually ride for a year on the permit but it is limited as to where you can go and what times of the day you can ride(daytime only). Any time that you feel comfortable enough to take the test just set an appointment and do it! Hope this helps!

  2. First, you take a written test to get your temporary permit. You can then either take an MSF course and get your full endorsement after a successful completion of the course, or you can take a riding test at the DMV. I would imagine you would have to get an Ohio driver's license before getting the MC endorsement.

  3. Hey A_Man!  One of my good friends did the written test, like the other fellow suggested, then he did the class.  There's usually a long wait for the class (probably more so now with gas prices) so sign up early if you're going to take it.  He said the class was REALLY worth the effort and they even have statistics on how people who take the class have fewer accidents and injuries.

Good luck and have fun.  Hope you enjoy Ohio!

Maybe I'll get the Ruby Red Roadster I've been dreaming of at some point and we can go to a Hog Rally.  :D
