Ohio State University Buckeyes beat Mount Olive College Trojans – Volleyball news
The Buckeyes of Ohio State University posted 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 26-24) win over Mount Olive College Trojans on Saturday, February 4 in the Penn State Invitational.
The ninth-ranked Buckeyes pulled off success in a convincing fashion and improved to an overall record of 8-4. On the other hand, Trojans suffered the loss of another match and fell to 2-6 on the season.
Alex Vazquez was the most effective player in Mount Olive team. He was the only one on his side who clipped double-digit kills (13). His effort was commendable but it proved to be a failing endeavour.
Coincidently, the Buckeyes also had only player with double-digit kills. Nick Gibson led Ohio State with a match-high 14 kills and also emerged as the top scorer of the match.
Overall, the Mount Olive recorded total 9 blocks, while Buckeyes had 13 blocks in the match.
The opening set of the match was full errors from both sides. The Buckeyes and Trojans remained incredibly close on the scorecard. The score frequently tied and both sides traded lead. The Buckeye went up at 15-14 and then rallied a wonderful 10-2 run, which
helped them to seize first-set win at 25-16. The first frame of the match featured a total of eight ties and five lead changes. Herron, Gibson and Tholen played instrumental role in leading Buckeyes to first-set victory.
Success in the opening stanza enabled the Buckeyes to make a good start in the following set. The Ohio State players showed consistency in attack and picked up lead, 6-2. The Trojans came from different angles and tried to catch up with the Buckeyes. They
managed to close the gap of points to 14-12 but could not fully overcome the opponent. The Buckeyes maintained their dominance in the match and closed second set 25-17.
With two sets in hand, the Ohio State entered the third set with an ambition of victory. On contrary, the Trojans were under huge pressure and seemed worried about the outcome of the match. They were in a “do or die” kind of situation in the third set of
the match. The Buckeyes put up a spirited-effort in third set and did not allow Trojans to hinder their performance. Third set also came successful for the Buckeyes and they won the match, 3-0.
The Buckeyes will return to action on coming Friday, when they will take on IPFW. The match will be held in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Likewise, the Trojans are scheduled to face Pfeiffer in the next match on Tuesday, February 7. The Trojans are deep down in trouble after losing most of their matches in the season. They really need to come up with a winning plan and shake off the bad impression.
