Ohio State defeats University of California on Saturday to become MPSF champions
Saturday night came with a lot of excitement in the world of volleyball as it brought along the final of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament.
The much-awaited deciding match took place between two teams that had never before won the national championship and now had it within their grasp. The two top teams that were able to make it to the MPSF finals were the Ohio State University men’s volleyball
team as well as the University of California, Santa Barbara.
However, as with every match, there was only one team that was able to take the title of the champions for themselves. Ohio State emerged as victors after they fought hard with UCSB during five long and thrilling sets. The spectators were able to see a good
game of volleyball as UCSB did not go down without putting up a commendable fight. The final set scores that declared the Buckeyes the champions of the MPSF stood at the following figures, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-9.
Ohio State end their season with an impressive number of 26 victories overall. These have been earned at the expense of suffering losses that amount to be six in all. In comparison, the number of times that the Gauchos have been able to bag themselves a
win equals to a figure of 18. The number of times that the Gauchos have under gone losses tally at 15.
The start of the first set of the match saw both the teams put on an excellent show. Neither the Gauchos nor the Buckeyes were backing off from the offensive. For most part of the game, tug of war ensued between the two teams. However, near the final stages
of the set, the Gauchos were able to take control and eventually bag the initial set of the game at 25-20.
The loss of the first game sent a much needed wake up call to the Buckeyes who were able to step up their game and put on a better performance than the one displayed in the first set. The pressure was kept on the Gauchos this time around. As a result, the
second set was bagged by the Buckeyes at 25-20.
After winning the third game, the Buckeyes lost the fourth and went on to take the fifth in a spectacular display of volleyball skill.
When the all important match had finally ended and the Buckeyes had sealed the deal, Coach Pete Hanson made the following comments in appreciation of his team, “This is a great group of kids, they have worked their butts off, and this is for all the guys
who have gone on before us and set the bar so high. We worked so hard just to add to that legacy, and I feel so happy for these guys.”
