Ohio State president says Boise State and TCU are undeserving of championship bid
Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee said in an interview with the Associated Press on Wednesday 24 November that TCU and Boise State did not deserve a spot in the national championship game, despite their
records.
Gee stated that Boise State and TCU do not have a difficult enough schedule to warrant a championship bid and that the clubs in the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference have a much more difficult road and
therefore should be given the benefit of the doubt.
“Well, I don’t know enough about the Xs and Os of college football,” Gee told the Associated Press. “I do know, having been both a Southeastern Conference president and a Big Ten president, that it’s like
murderer’s row every week for these schools. We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day. So I think until a university runs through that gantlet that there’s some reason to believe that they not be the best teams
to [be] in the big ballgame.”
Mid-major teams such as Boise State and TCU often face this type of criticism. However, this is the first time this season that a school president has come out and openly denounced the skill of either
side.
Both TCU and Boise State have unbeaten records and are sitting third and fourth respectively in the Bowl Championship Series standings. Meanwhile, Ohio State is currently second in the Big 10 and eighth
in the BCS standings with a 10-1 record.
Ohio State started the year in the top five. However, after they suffered a loss to Wisconsin on 16 October they fell in the rankings.
Ohio State has one more game this season against the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday 27 November.
