Oil, is declining why not have a hydrogen based energy system?

Energy for every thing now powered with oil. Yes, there is R&D to be done. Yes, the upfront costs are high. The big YES is that it is non-polluting, and sustainable. Eventually hydrogen can be used to make HYDROGEN !! Almost a perpetual motion machine.

  1. get buzy designing it, Work out the distribution and the safe useage.

    Safe storage etc.

Do you have ANY Idea how many lawyers will try and cash in on you?

They'll sue for EVERY idiot that blows themselves up, or freezes a fingertip etc.

Gasoline would have the same problems today with lawyers if it was new to the market.

  2. Maybe when big biz can re-establish itself in those areas.....right now it's still profitable to gut the public while they still own gas operated vehicles and such...They don't care about pollution as long as it does not  thwart their money making scams...

  3. The problem is where to get the hydrogen?

There are no hydrogen wells, just oil wells.

It has to be made from natural gas (which comes from wells) or by electrolyzing water, and where does the electricity for the electrolysis come from?

hydrogen can't be used to make hydrogen!

edit: if you are talking about fusion power, you should have said so. yes, that has a lot of potential. Lots of people are working on it. I't possible that we may have practical fusion reactors in 10-20 years. On the other hand, maybe not.

  4. There's no such thing as hydrogen "energy".  You can't bore a hole in ANYTHING and get hydrogen out.

Hydrogen is envisioned only as an energy storage device, and frankly, it's not a good one.  You can't put much  hydrogen in a 5 gallon bucket.

Since hydrogen can provide 0% of our energy needs (since hydrogen is only an energy storage device) it's completely unsustainable, and it'll generate plenty of pollution.

P.S. Perpetual motion machine?  Are you nuts?

P.P.S. You have been badly misled by somebody.  Today, hydrogen provides 0% of our energy needs.  Someday, with much research and development, it will eventually provide 0% of our energy needs.  That's the truth.  Energy from other sources has to be used to generate hydrogen.  The resulting hydrogen can be used one time, then it's water.  That's the truth.

  5. b/c hydrogen based energy systems are not widely traded on the market.  Oil on the other hand is a huge part of commodity trading.  The high price of oil has nothing to do with supply and demand like it is suppose to, oil is really high in price do to spculation in the market and investors buying it up and sell it when the price rises.

  6. You can't use hydrogen to get hydrogen.  That is a perpetual motion machine, and there is no such thing.

There is no free hydrogen on earth.  Most of the hydrogen is in the water in the oceans.  It takes energy to separate the hydrogen from the H2O.  When you burn the hydrogen, it combines with oxtgen and makes water.  Guess what:  It takes as much energy to break down the water into hydrogen and oxygen as you get when you combine them in combustion.  That energy has to come from someplace else.

Ultimately, hydrogen is the best bet to replace oil for cars, but we need to get the the energy to produce it from solar or wind power, or fusion, and we have to build a whole lot of new power plants and hydrolysis plants.
