Question:

Oil leaking out of bottom of my outboard 9.9?

I have a nissan 9.9 2 stroke 2002. used it last week every thing ok. noticed yesterday that their is some oil on the lower unit looks like it came out of the hole that the drive shaft? gose in to the lower unit. any thoughts. know where to get a pdf manual?

  1. Follow William's instructions.  Buy a maintenance and repair manual, it will pay for itself by doing one repair job yourself. Here's a link:

  2. Your problem is a leaking oil seal.More then likely it is from the bearing carrier.The most likely cause is old fishing line wound up behind the prop.It is an easy repair to do,but I do

    recommend you go to your local dealer and purchase a manual.

  3. Let the motor sit upright for a day or two- then open the drain s***w on the bottom of the lower unit to check the color of the lower oil. If you get water or white milky looking goop out of it, the unit needs to be resealed. If the oil is clean, you have some unburned fuel /oil mix that accumulated on the inside of the exhaust ,and dripped down the shaft and out the exhaust outlet.
