Oil on spark Plugs on a Plymouth Neon?

I have a 1998 Plymouth Neon and When i took the spark plugs out, it had oil deposits on it. The car Misfires, it has hard starting.

I looked at the repair manual and it says

"Oil is leaking past worn valve guides or piston rings into the combustion chamber.

I was wondering, if this is serious? How much will it cost to fix? and does this affect the fuel economy cause i currently get 30mpg or so.

  1. if its just the valve stem seals on it causing this to happen that can be repaired for about 150-175 bucks, parts and labor all included ,plus ever who does it also needs to clean the top of the head out real good also, and change the oil ,it takes about 4 hours to do all of this and get it back running again, good luck.

  2. Where was the oil on the plugs?  On the bottom of the plug(s) or on the top on the insulators?  If it's at the top, it's not a big problem...you just need a new valve cover gasket kit.  If it is on the bottom, it's more serious as the engine is burning oil.  You'll need to find out how the oil is getting in there but yes, the repair manual is correct in saying it could be worn valve guides or seals or the piston rings are shot.

  3. It means you probably need an engine rebuild.  I would check with a good, reliable mechanic, and ask whether they can do a valve guide seal replacement, and/or a ring job, without doing a complete rebuild, and what it would cost.  Good luck.  (And it won't affect your fuel economy enough for you to tell the difference.)

  4. If you haven't changed the plugs in  along time, carbon build up can be normal.  If the plugs weren't wet you are probably OK.

If it runs good, and isn't using any oil I would bet your OK

  5. It is most likley in the head since they were junk you will need a compression test to tell for sure though, they were fairly cheap to fix
